āPeople say I look so happy - and I say, 'That's the Botox.'ā ā Dolly Parton
During pandemic lockdowns and the rise of remote work, the cosmetic and beauty industry saw a huge boom. Maybe it was Americans finally having the free time to get haircuts more regularly or build that perfect skincare/healthcare routine. Or maybe, feeling the need to always look good in Zoom meetings, more Americans turned to cosmetic procedures like Botox. And donāt forget how Instagram, TikTok and the Kardashians are altering Americansā beauty standards.
But whatever the case - the pandemic coincided with a time when cosmetic treatments like Botox were becoming more mainstream and less invasive, and retailers began expanding their online presence.
And, even amidst high inflation concerns, Americans seem as vain as ever and arenāt slowing down their beauty purchases. Weāll be looking at four stocks - two focused on the beauty/cosmetic retail industry, and two focused on cosmetic procedures like Botox. And hopefully, you can come away appreciating how social media influencers are helping to grow an almost $600 billion global industry.

History of Botox
Before diving into our stock picks, letās take a quick look at the relatively recent history of Botox.
Botulism is a bacterial infection that produces a paralytic compound. The toxin impacts the nervous system by impeding nerve transmissions to muscles. When the bacteria grows uncontrollably, it can induce even fatal paralysis.
But while botulism injections were used in the 1970s to treat muscle spasms, it wasnāt until the early 2000s that dermatologists realized Botox had cosmetic applications as well. Patients receiving injections to alleviate eye spasms noticed a positive side effect - their wrinkles and lines around the eyes were disappearing.
It wasnāt long before Botox became interchangeable with cosmetic surgery and, in 2002, the FDA granted approval for the first Botox cosmetic treatment, focusing on alleviating frown lines.
