SQUEEZ OF THE DAY

Apple Intelligence

Apple announced its long-awaited push into apple intelligence on Monday. They’ll team up with OpenAI to give all of your products - iPhone, Mac, Mail, and Photos apps - a makeover. Apple says it’s personalized, and deeply integrated, and is trying to spin it as one of its most revolutionary offerings yet.

For a couple of years now, Apple has been exploring ways to leverage AI to improve Siri. By incorporating ChatGPT, Apple plans to introduce a revamped Siri that offers fewer awkward pauses and more natural, fluid responses. Users will now be able to engage in whole conversations with Siri and even type out their requests for seamless assistance.

Siri will have the smarts to understand context across your Apple devices. Need to save an address from Messages? Siri will have you covered. Plus, Siri can tap into ChatGPT for those times you want a second opinion.

Apple Intelligence isn’t just about Siri. Your devices will prioritize notifications, helping you stay focused on what matters. Overwhelmed with emails or notes? The new writing tools can summarize or rewrite content for you. Plus, you’ll be able to create AI-generated images of people, places, and animals in three different styles.

Elon Musk wasn't too happy with the news of the collaboration between OpenAI and Apple, labeling it "an unacceptable security violation" and threatening to ban Apple devices from his companies.

Takeaway: While Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Bard (or should we say Gemini?) have been taking up the AI spotlight, Apple’s entry is making waves. Despite some hiccups from the competition – like Google’s “eat rocks” blunder and Microsoft’s security nightmare with their Recall app – Apple’s reputation for smooth, secure software gives it a leg up.

Let’s hope they don’t trip, because a slip-up could tarnish not just their brand but the whole generative AI industry. In classic Apple fashion, the stock took a little dip despite the big news – down 2% to $193/share.

BOOK OF THE DAY

Warren and Bill

Few friendships have had such far-reaching implications for the world—from finance to technology to philanthropy—than that between Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. After meeting at a party in 1991, the two played cards and golf, shared jokes, swapped trade secrets, ate junk food, talked and listened.

Their growing friendship would impact each man and lead to change on a grander scale, culminating in the development of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which holds nearly $50 billion in assets.

How did such an unusual union blossom? In what ways specifically did each man begin to influence the other? How did these two avid wealth accumulators jointly decide to address some of the world’s most critical problems—poverty, disease, inequality—by giving their wealth away?

And what, finally, does their giga-wealthy partnership mean for the rest of us in an age of great wealth—and great inequality? This book gives the fullest account yet of this extraordinary relationship and explores how it has transformed these two men—and is changing the world for the better for all of us.

“One of the most impactful relationships in history, and the basis of an upcoming play and film.”

DAILY ACUMEN

Flow

Flow, a state of heightened concentration where one is fully absorbed in an activity, has been linked to various mental and cardiovascular health benefits.

This concept, popularized by psychologist MihĂĄly CsĂkszentmihĂĄlyi, describes an optimal experience where people are highly effective and lose track of time.

Recent research, including a study by Miriam Mosing and her team, suggests that while flow may be associated with lower risks of depression and anxiety, the relationship is complex and influenced by genetic predispositions and personality traits like neuroticism.

Although flow itself may not directly cause better health outcomes, engaging in flow-inducing activities can provide immediate psychological rewards by diverting focus from stress and worries.
